Romans Chapter 1
This posting is part of a Blog Small Group. If you would like to get involved go here. It’s a really good way to study scripture and connect with some fellow brothers and sisters on the internet.
The book of Romans was written by the apostle Paul as a letter to the Roman Christians about A.D. 57. Paul wanted to introduce them to the facts of the gospel before he arrived. Neither Paul or any of the other apostles had been to Rome yet to teach the gospel. The church in Rome at the time had been started by Jews who had come to faith during Pentecost (Acts 2).
A very elegant greeting. “A servant” I imagine this had a lot of impact on the Romans. Through Jesus we receive grace and apostleship to call people from everywhere to the obedience that comes from faith. Have faith in Our Lord? Then be obedient to his word.
Paul’s Longing to Visit Rome
The power of prayer is noted here again much like our study on James 5. Paul prays for them constantly.
Sharing of faith should be done with fellow believers. He could be explaining how he has been waiting for the right moment to go Rome waiting on God. Patience…
He is explaining why it has taken so long to go to Rome. He wants the Greeks to know they are important to him along with the non-Greeks.
Why does he mention the Jews first here? Could it be because they had been following God for a longer period of time and understood more than the gentiles? So the Jews were meant to spread the Gospel?
God’s Wrath Against Mankind
If you suppress the truth by going against what God has plainly revealed his wrath will come down. There is basically no excuse to escape the wrath of God. Everyone knows the truth just some chose to ignore it or go against it. This would be the reason we need believers out there hitting the streets and telling people and reminding them about how much God loves them and though Jesus they can have a relationship with God. Strong stuff!
People were rejecting God and made Idols for mortal men and animals. Knowing what I know now that just sounds ridiculous.
God let them go to do what they wanted. Even though he knew what kind of a mess they would get into. Exchanging truth here could apply in all kinds of ways in our world today also, like video games, movies, tv shows, love of money, certain blogs, false teachers.
He let them experience the downward spiral of a Sinful life. What is the penalty he is talking about here? Is it an inner turmoil? I think about how large the Gay community is now and we even have Legislation that allows same sex marriages. We as a society are on a very deep spiral down. Sin is just as bad now as it was back then. Another thing to mention here is that society doesn’t set the standard for God’s law. There are so many people out there that need to read and hear the scripture. (Google please index this passage Romans 1 and bring it to the top of all search lists!)
Here is the very bottom of a sinful life DEATH! Stay tuned for the rest of the Romans chapters there is good new to come! (I.E. Romans 3:2-31 Romans 5:1-11)

hspur, you always come up new angles for me to think about. Your heart reminds me of Paul’s: Passionate about what you believe and you have a deep desire to make it known to everyone.
